RICHARDS: N30 32.317 W95 47.068 (FS 219, 4.3 miles north of FM 149) Western terminus of the LSHT. From Houston go north on I-45 to FM 1375 (New Waverly exit). Go west on 1375 some 14.5 miles to the intersection of FM 1375 and FM 149. Turn right on 149 and continue 4.3 m. North on FM 149 (watch for orange circle on tree on the left), then 0.1 m. south on FS 219. Trailhead is on the south/left side of the road. RICHARDS LOOP

0.0 Starting at L.S.H.T. PARKING LOT # 1 - RICHARDS (FS 219) go east.

0.2 Go south on the LLCL trail at the Main Trail, LLCL Junction (0.2 mi).

2.2 Watch for pond on the left just after FS 219D. Continue south and then east, crossing FS 203 (2.0).

3.2 Continue southeast to the West Fork Crossover (1.0).

3.5 Go east on the crossover to the Main Trail intersection (0.3).

5.0 Head back northwest on the Main Trail past a pond on your left. The trail again crosses FS 203 (1.5).

6.9 Continue northwest to the parking lot (1.9).

Trail Head # 2
SAND BRANCH: N30 30.663 W95 45.413 (FS211/Bethel Road, 1.5 miles south of FM 149)

From Houston go north on I-45 to FM 1375 (New Waverly exit). Go west on 1375 some 14.5 miles to the intersection of FM 1375 and FM 149. Turn right on FM 149 and continue approximately 1.5 miles further northwest on FM 149. Watch for FS 211/Bethel Road sign on left (on north becomes TX 1791 to Huntsville); turn left/south on FS211/Bethel Road. Travel 2.0 miles on paved then dirt road. Trailhead is on right side of road. SAND BRANCH LOOP

0.0 Starting from the FS 211 parking lot go west on the West Fork Crossover.

0.3 To the Little Lake Creek Loop (LLCL) Wilderness Trail. Turn south on the LLCL. The trail crosses an old logging road (FS 211A) and climbs gently. The trail descends and passes by a pond on the east side (not visible from the trail but watch for orange tape marker).

1.4 Cross Midyett Road (1.1 mi).

1.9 Cross FSR 211 (0.5 mi). The trail then descends to cross Sand Branch (very steep banks--cross with caution after heavy rain).

3.2 Continue to the junction with the Sand Branch Crossover traveling close to a small pond (1.3 mi).

3.9 Cross FSR 244 and continue northeast to meet the LSHT (0.7 mi). The LSHT heads northwest along an abandoned pipeline beside the Little Lake Creek Wilderness.

5.4 North Wilderness Trail intersection (1.5 mi).Continue northwest on the LSHT.

5.9 FS 211 parking lot (0.5 mi).

From Houston go north on I-45 to FM 1375 (New Waverly exit). Exit and ride feeder north to FM 1374 crossover. Proceed west on FM 1374 for some 10 miles to LSHTrail intersection. If you come to Stubblefield Road you’ve gone too far. Begin in-and-out hike (7.0 mile or shorter depending on turn-around point). Directions for finding the trailhead in Elkins Lake: From the I-45 feeder road about 5 miles south the city of Huntsville, or about 2 miles north of the Huntsville State Park exit off of I-45, turn on to Augusta headed west into the Elkins Lake Subdivision.  Go 0.5 miles to the intersection of Augusta with Greenbriar Street .  Turn left on Greenbriar and go 1.1 miles to River Oaks Road.  Turn right on to River Oaks Road, then left on West Green Briar, and then veer left on to Camelia Drive .  Camelia ends at a circular drive where you will see a small road at the head of the circle.  To get to the LSHT, you’ll either drive or walk up this small drive and take a right on the paved unstriped road that leads to the water treatment facility.  Just after you cross over the cattle grate, you’ll see the LSHT heading off into the woods westbound.  The eastbound LSHT follows the unstriped road you just came up and crosses over the Camelia Lake spillway (the trail heads off into the woods just after you walk over the top of the slippery spillway).

From I-45/Park Road go east on Park Road 40 for 1.0 mile and intersect US 75. Turn right for 0.1 miles and then turn left on Evelyn Lane. Sign at corner. Go 0.3 miles and there will be a Blue Metal gate to private property. To the right of the gate you will see the Hiker's Sign. 10-Milers begin here: out and back. 5-Milers: drop half the cars at Evelyn road (West side of Phelps); ferry rest of the cars and all the hikers over to East side of Phelps off 2296; hike back. FOUR NOTCH: N30 38.759 W95 25.364 (FS 213, 0.2 miles north of Four Notch Rd)

From Houston go north on I-45 to FM 1375 (New Waverly exit). Go right/East on 1375; turn left/North on US 75; turn right/Northeast on FM2296 for 4.2 mi; turn right/East for 2.4 mi. on Four Notch Road (FM 2929), turn left/North on FS 213 for 0.2 mi; trailhead and hunters camp is on the left. FOUR NOTCH LOOP (a challenging hike)

0.0 Starting at the Four Notch trailhead on FS 213, the trail heads northeast for 0.3 miles to the

0.3 West junction of the LSHT and the Four Notch Loop (FNL).  The Four Notch Loop is marked with silver aluminum markers with a red stripe across the middle.  The LSHT is marked with a plain silver marker.  Turn north onto the Four Notch Loop

1.7 Cross FS 213 (1.4 mi). From here the FNL travels northwest, then northeast.    

2.2 Cross closed Forest Service Road (0.5 mi). The trail then becomes more isolated until it reaches its northern most point and turns southeast.  The trail crosses a few primitive roads or logging trails as it heads southeast.

3.3 Cross the upper reaches of Boswell Creek (1.1 mi).

4.5 Continue east-southeast and cross another Forest Service Road, 206A (1.2 mi).

5.8 Head southeast to the east junction with the LSHT (1.3 mi).

6.9 Go west and then southwest the LSHT. Cross Boswell Creek again (1.1 mi)--prone to flooding during heavy rain. Watch for mushrooms in the Boswell Creek bottoms. Trail turns to the northwest.

8.6 Cross FS 223 (1.7 mi); continue northwest.

9.7 Four Notch Loop/Main Trail junction (1.1 mi). Go southwest.

10.0 FS 213 trailhead and hunters camp (0.3 mi).


FOUR NOTCH/HIDDEN LAKE LOOP

0.0 Starting at the Four Notch trailhead on FS 213, the trail heads northeast for 0.3 miles to the

6.4 Cross FS 213 (1.1) Road walk to trailhead or enter woods at trail crossing and hike trail back.

7.1 FS 213 trailhead and hunters camp (0.7 mi).


 

FOUR NOTCH MAIN TRAIL

0.0  FS 213 trailhead and hunters camp.  Head northeast.

0.3  Four Notch Loop/Main Trail junction (0.3 mi). Turn to the right and go southeast. You will come to a camping area for hunters; in another 100 feet is FS 223.

1.4 Cross FS 223 (1.1 mi); in another 100 feet you will see the hiker's sign. Enter woods. Trail turns to the northeast.

3.1 Cross Boswell Creek (1.7 mi)--prone to flooding during heavy rain. Watch for mushrooms in the Boswell Creek bottoms. 

4.2 Four Notch Loop Trail intersects main trail (1.1 mi). Go east.

4.4 Trail turns right and follows Briar Creek (0.2 mi).

4.7  Cross Briar Creek bridge (0.3 mi)

5.2  Cross Gravel road, FS 206 (0.5 mi)

6.3 Pond on left. Good Camping Spot (1.1 mi).

6.5 EAST END OF FOUR NOTCH SECTION (0.2 mi).





Trail Head # 9
BIG WOODS: N30 34.673 W95 15.460 (Ira Denison Rd., 0.2 mile west of FS 202)

From Evergreen go east on Highway 150 for 0.3 miles; turn north (right) on John Warren Road/FS 202 for 1.7 miles; turn left on Ira Denison Rd. for 0.2 miles to Big Woods Trailhead. Drop off half the cars and ferry the hikers to the intersection of FS 202 and FS 207 to begin the 8.6 mile hike. The LSHTrail enters the forest on the southwest side of the intersection. FS 207 TO BIG WOODS TRAILHEAD

0.0  There will be a mile marker 54.2 on entrance at intersection of FS 202 and FS 207

2.7   Bearing tree and old fence one (2.7 miles). There are many small creeks in this section.

4.0   Trail comes within 100 feet of FS 202 and turns sharply right (1.3 miles). A small pond is just out of sight of the trail to the left. Good place to stop for lunch.

5.6  Cross gravel road FS 202D (1.6 miles)

6.3  Watch for turn to right (0.7 miles)

8.6 Big Woods Trailhead. Mile marker on tree 62.8 (2.3 miles)

MAGNOLIA: N30 31.669 W95 13.192 (FM 945 at Butch Arthur Rd, 2.7 miles south of TX 150) From Houston, go north on US 59, take the Coldspring exit, FM 2025, just past Cleveland, TX. Go left/Northwest to the intersection of FM 945. Turn left/West towards Evergreen, traveling 11.0 miles to Butch Arthur Road. Trailhead is on the East. Hikers may wish to drop a car a t L.S.H.T.
